Kitaro Nishida and his philosophy

Having been born in the third year of theMeiji Era,
Nishida was presentedwith a newly unique opportunity to
contemplateeastern philosophicalissues in the freshlight
thatwesternphilosophyshone on them. Nishida's original
and creative philosophy,incorporating ideas of
bothZenand westernphilosophy, was aimed at bringing the
East and West closer. Throughout hislifetime, Nishida
published a number of books and essays including "
AnInquiry into the Good" and "TheLogic of the Place of
Nothingness and the Religious Worldview." Taken as
awhole, Nishida’s life work was the foundation for
theKyoto Schoolof Philosophy and the inspiration forthe
original thinking of his disciples. The most famous
concept in Nishida'sphilosophy is the logic of basho
(Japanese: 場所; usually translated as "place" or"topos
"), a non-dualistic concretelogic, meant to overcome
the inadequacy of the subject-object distinctionessential
to the subject logic ofAristotleand the predicate logic
ofKant, through the affirmationof what he calls the "
absolutely contradictory self-identity", a dynamic
tensionof opposites that, unlike the dialectical logic
ofHegel, does not resolve in a synthesis, butrather
defines its proper subject by maintaining the tension
between affirmationand negation as opposite poles or
